The story
What the customer called about
No hot water anywhere in the house.
What we found
The Navien tankless on the outside wall had frozen during the cold snap. With the cover off, it was frozen solid inside.
What we couldn't know until we opened it up
Whether it could be thawed out and repaired. Once we opened it up, we found the ice had burst the heat exchanger and damaged other internal parts.
The options we gave them
Repair wasn't on the table. A unit with a burst heat exchanger and freeze damage inside isn't worth saving. We priced a replacement with freeze protection so this wouldn't happen again.
What they chose, and why
A Rinnai RXP199. It has built-in freeze protection (as long as the unit has power) and a built-in recirculation pump.
Before, during and after
Photos from the job itself
A winter freeze left this 2023 Angier home with no hot water: the Navien tankless outside had frozen solid and burst its heat exchanger. We replaced it with a Rinnai RXP199, which has built-in freeze protection and a recirculation pump.
