What Is a Tankless Water Heater?

Unlike a traditional tank water heater, which keeps 40-80 gallons of water hot around the clock whether you’re using it or not, a tankless (or “on-demand”) water heater only heats water as it flows through the unit. When you turn on a hot tap, water passes over a set of heat exchangers that activate instantly, so you get continuous hot water without a tank slowly running out mid-shower — and without paying to keep a tank full of water hot 24/7.

Benefits of Going Tankless

  • Lower utility bills. Most homeowners see roughly 10-20% savings on water heating costs after switching from a tank unit.
  • Never run out of hot water. No more waiting for a tank to refill between showers.
  • Saves space. A tankless unit mounts on the wall and frees up the closet or utility room a tank used to take up.
  • Longer lifespan. A well-maintained Rinnai tankless unit typically lasts 20 years or more, roughly double the lifespan of a standard tank water heater.
  • Ideal for vacation or second homes. No standing tank means no risk of a slow leak flooding the house while you’re away, and no cost to keep a tank hot when nobody’s there to use it.

Worth knowing before you switch

Tankless units cost more upfront than a tank water heater, and very large households running multiple hot-water fixtures at once may need a second unit or a higher-capacity model. We’ll talk through both of those honestly during your quote — we’d rather you know the tradeoffs than find out after the fact.

Our Recommended Models — Rinnai RX199 vs. RXP199

Both of these are Rinnai’s Sensei+ series, ultra-low NOx, condensing tankless units — the difference comes down to one thing: the recirculation pump.

Rinnai RX199

  • Up to 199,000 BTU input, up to 11 GPM flow rate
  • 0.98 UEF (98% efficient), ENERGY STAR certified
  • Indoor venting (concentric or PVC/CPVC)
  • Freeze protection down to -22°F — built for NC winters
  • No built-in recirculation pump

Rinnai RXP199

  • Same core performance as the RX199 — 199,000 BTU, up to 11 GPM, 0.98 UEF
  • Built-in recirculation pump, so hot water arrives at distant fixtures faster with far less water wasted down the drain waiting for it to heat up
  • Indoor or outdoor installation
  • Wi-Fi enabled for remote temperature control and monitoring

Why ARC Plumbing Installs Rinnai

We’re a Rinnai-certified installer, and it’s the only tankless brand we recommend to our customers. A few reasons why:

  • Reliability track record. Rinnai has manufactured tankless water heaters longer than almost anyone in the category, and it shows in how few callbacks we get.
  • Efficiency. Our go-to models carry a 0.98 Uniform Energy Factor (UEF) — meaning 98% of the energy they use goes directly into heating your water — and are ENERGY STAR certified.
  • Parts and service availability. Because we install Rinnai on the vast majority of our jobs, we keep common parts on hand and our techs are deeply familiar with the platform, which usually means a faster repair.

Happy Clients

Our 10 year old Rinnai Instant hot water heater stopped working; I called ARC plumbing and they came over within an hour to diagnose the situation. Needed a PC board. Long story short, after waiting a week to get the factory direct part, the problem was also due a mouse family that moved into the water heater and chewed up some wires. No diagnostic code for that! They made it possible to replace the entire unit on the same day, with us buying a new one, and they did not charge us for the previous service. We were thrilled with nice hot water after 10 days of glamping. Brantley, Clay and Shane did a fantastic job overall; they are polite and easy to work with.

Tankless Water Heater Repair, Maintenance & Replacement in Raleigh

Repair: Rinnai tankless units are reliable, but like any appliance they can throw an error code, lose flow, or stop igniting. Our techs are Rinnai-trained and carry common parts, so most repairs are done in a single visit.

Maintenance: Tankless units need periodic descaling/flushing to clear mineral buildup from the heat exchanger — especially important with the hard water common across the Triangle. We recommend an annual flush to keep your unit running at full efficiency and protect the warranty.

Replacement: Already have an aging tank unit or a different brand of tankless system giving you trouble? We handle full replacements and can typically get a new Rinnai system installed same-day or next-day.

How much does a tankless water heater cost to install?

Cost depends on your home’s existing setup (gas line, venting, electrical) and which model you choose, but most Rinnai tankless installations in the Raleigh area run $3,000 – $7,000 once existing plumbing/venting is accounted for. We always provide a free on-site quote before any work starts, so there’s no guessing.

Both deliver the same 199,000 BTU output and 0.98 UEF efficiency rating. The RXP199 adds a built-in recirculation pump, which gets hot water to your fixtures faster and wastes less water waiting for it to heat up — the RX199 doesn’t include that pump.

With regular maintenance, Rinnai tankless units typically last 20 years or more — roughly double the lifespan of a standard tank water heater.

Yes. We recommend an annual descaling/flush to clear mineral buildup from the heat exchanger, particularly given the hard water common in the Raleigh/Wake County area. Skipping maintenance can shorten the unit’s lifespan and void the manufacturer warranty.

In most cases, yes — but it depends on your gas line capacity, venting situation, and hot water demand. We’ll evaluate your home’s setup during a free quote and recommend the right model (or tell you honestly if a tank unit still makes more sense for your situation).
